Writer Jason Aaron | Artist Esad Ribic and Others | Cover Artist Joe Quesada (Marvel Comics)
This is it. The single most important issue from Marvel Comics for the entire year. While Marvel has remained the industry sales leader, it’s plain to see that readers haven’t been thrilled with every creative decision the publisher has made the past few years. Marvel Legacy #1 aims to address those concerns by course-correcting the publishing line with a single, 50-page story that embraces Marvel’s core characters and sets a path for them into the future while also making room for newer characters.
The issue features everything from the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC in the distant past to many of its heroes in the present, new and old. Marvel has teased a big return that everyone has been waiting for… and one we have been dreading. They’ve already leaked one of those twists ahead of time.
Can Marvel Legacy do what DC Rebirth did for DC Comics last year? We can’t wait to find out.
Writer Jason Aaron | Artist Valerio Schiti | Cover Artist Russell Dauterman (Marvel Comics)
One comic that doesn’t need course-correction is The Mighty Thor. Jason Aaron’s epic Thor saga has been one of Marvel’s best books for years and it doesn’t show any signs of letting up. This issue features a clash between Thor and the new Ultimate Thor aka the War Thor, so it’s sure to be full of hammers, lightning, and many boasts made in grand Asgardian dialect.
Writer Jeff Lemire | Artist German Peralta | Cover Artist Mike Deodato (Marvel Comics)
We were sad to hear that Jeff Lemire was departing as writer of this book because he’s been telling such an awesome, enthralling Thanos story, one worthy of the Mad Titan. But we’re also eager to see how he wraps up this story arc before passing the writing reins to Donny Cates. With Thanos at his lowest point, he’s got to face-off against his son, Thane, who now wields the power of the Phoenix. The magic of Lemire’s run is that Thanos has done some vile things to survive, yet we’re still strangely rooting for the big purple lug.
