HBO Officially Producing Watchmen Pilot

HBO will produce a pilot and several back-up scripts.

After reports and rumors earlier this year, HBO has officially committed to producing a pilot based on Alan Moore and David GIbbons' acclaimed graphic novel Watchmen.

HBO will produce a pilot of the show with Lost and The Leftovers executive producer Damon Lindelof, and has committed to several more scripts being written. The network has not committed to a full series order yet.

Lindelof recently teased the beginning of production on the Watchmen series via his Instagram.

Lindelof had reportedly been attached to an adaptation that HBO was in talks to produce earlier this year. HBO President Casey Bloys earlier this year said that the possible series wouldn't be a straight adaptation of the graphic novel.

"I don't want to talk too much about it, but Damon is thinking about it in a way exactly as you describe it," Bloys said. "Which is, how do you take the material and derive from it a TV show, without making it a literal translation?

"Would that mean creating material for the show that wasn't in the graphic novel? "I think so, yes," Bloys said earlier this year.

A film adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' comic was released in 2009. For our thoughts on the Zach Snyder-directed movie, which won't be related to HBO's potential TV series, read IGN's Watchmen review.

Lindelof's latest work, the critically acclaimed HBO drama The Leftovers, recently ended with its third season. For our thoughts on the show's emotional conclusion, read IGN's The Leftovers: Season 3 review.
