Game of Thrones Season 8 Directors Revealed

It looks like things in Westeros are going to get a lot worse before they get better.

The directors who will helm the last six episodes of Game of Thrones ever have been revealed.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the eighth and final season of HBO's hit fantasy drama will see the return of two Emmy award winning directors who've headed some of the most infamous episodes of the series.

Miguel Sapochnik is on deck to handle at least one episode from the upcoming season. He previously directed the noteworthy episodes "Battle of the Bastards," and "The Winds of Winter," from Game of Thrones season 6, for which he won an Emmy for best direction.

The other director returning for the final season is none other than David Nutter, who previously directed season 3's heart-wrenching "The Red Wedding," and the season 5 finale "Mother's Mercy," in addition to four other episodes over three seasons.

However, neither Sapochnik nor Nutter will be directing the Game of Thrones finale. The sixth-and-final episode of the eighth-and-final season will be co-directed by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, including filming multiple endings to avoid leaks.

Though each of the showrunners have directed episodes in the early seasons of the show, it's unclear who will get the top billing for the final episode, since the director's guild allows only one name to be credited for direction of a television episode.

The big question remaining is how many, and which, episodes will be handled by each director, though in past seasons directors have usually headed up two episodes each.

Game of Thrones final season will ramp up production this fall through next spring, though HBO has said the Game of Thrones season 8 release date may happen in 2018 or be delayed until 2019.
