Game of Thrones Producer Developing Prequel Series

Bryan Cogman has been with the show since Season 1.

A fifth Game of Thrones prequel in development is being produced by a longtime producer on the existing HBO series, a new report confirms.

EW has revealed that Game of Thrones co-executive producer Bryan Cogman is writing a prequel series — in addition to the other four we previously learned HBO was developing — and has worked closely with George R. R. Martin in the project's development. Martin is also involved in the creation of some of these other prequel spinoffs.

Cogman has been with the series since its inaugural season, during which he was an assistant to showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss. He has gone on to be one of the most frequently credited writers on the show, including Season 7's "Stormborn," Season 5's "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken," and Season 4's "Oathkeeper."

Unfortunately, no specific story details about Cogman's prequel series are known at this time beyond the previously announced parameters — all the prequels are set before the events of Game of Thrones and do not involve any of the show's current cast.

None of these in-development prequels are guaranteed to air, and there is no target air date for any of the series. IGN recently spoke with a writer of another prequel series, Jane Goldman, about how her series will be "recognizable as a past event" to fans.

Any of the prequels series, should they air, are not expected to come until after Game of Thrones' eighth and final season, for which HBO is reportedly filming multiple endings to avoid leaks. Game of Thrones' upcoming eighth season will be its last.

HBO revealed Season 7 will come to Blu-ray and DVD in December, while the digital download will be made available later this month on September 25. For a limited time, the Blu-ray and DVD versions will include the Conquest & Rebellion: An Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms feature.

IGN's Game of Thrones: Season 7 review said it was both "helped and hurt by an accelerated pace." With your Sunday nights now free, here are IGN's recommendations for series you should catch up on.
