Captain Phasma’s eye-catching silver armor gets swapped out for something a bit more mercenary in her mini-series from Marvel Comics.
Warning: this article contains spoilers for Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Captain Phasma!
The story from writer Kelly Thompson and artist Marco Checchetto takes place just after the events of The Force Awakens, following Captain Phasma as she desperately tries to cover up that is was she who lowered the Starkiller Base shields and allowed the Resistance to blow it up. She easily erased the computer history of her actions, but when she tried to blame it on a fellow First Order member, things got complicated. The scapegoat took off in a TIE Fighter, so Phasma recruited a TIE pilot of her own to track him down and put a laser bolt in his head.
That brings us up to Issue #2 where the duo and their BB unit track their prey to planet Luprora. They discover it is a rocky planet with vast oceans, inhabited by a primitive population. Before they make their way to a nearby village, they decide to change into local garb so their First Order armor doesn’t draw the wrong kind of attention.
Phasma disrobes, with Checchetto hiding any hint of her face from view, keeping up the mystery of what she looks like underneath (even though we all know it’s actress Gwendoline Christie).
Her new outfit looks like that of a Star Wars bounty hunter more than anything, with it's cobbled together armored chest plate, cargo pants, ankle knife holster, hand wraps, and respirator helmet with a red eye-line. Staying true to her personal style, she’s still wearing a cape-like shawl.
Soon after, her new armor is put to the test as a giant tentacled sea monster tries to eat her.
She’s barely able to fight it off, ultimately getting it to let go by plunging her knife into its head.
This comic book bridges the gap between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, and we’ve already seen that she’s back in her signature silver armor in imagery from the new movie, so obviously this look is temporary. If anything, it’d make for a cool action figure or alternate skin in a video game.
