Beaches, boys, and … Blood Mist??
With Sarada’s arc finally coming to an end, it's back to school for the students of the Hidden Leaf. Lucky for them the Hokage has planned a field trip to the Land of Water, which provides the young ninja a chance to relax, and us a chance to see how the modern era has changed other parts of the ninja world. The field trip antics are entertaining but the story moves a bit slowly, giving us only the tiniest hint of a coming conflict before the episode’s end.
With last week’s fear of war still hanging in the air, Naruto hopes to improve relations with the Land of Water by sending his village’s students on a field trip to their Hidden Village. Principal Iruka concurs, and before they know it the students are on a cruise ship en route to the Hidden Mist. To the surprise of the students the Mist has been completely modernized, perhaps even more so than the Leaf, and seeing their amazement in the midst of a different village and culture is undoubtedly entertaining. In typical anime fashion, the girls are charmed by the foreign boys, while the boys are more interested in games and movies.
No doubt we will see more culture shock in the next episode, I just wish this one had moved along a little quicker rather than backloading all the most interesting scenes. The Academy and cruise ship scenes are necessary to set up the plot, but certainly less interesting than the Mist scenes, and by the time they’re all said and done the episode is nearly over. The final scene in which our heroes have a run in with some unsavory Mist ninjas sets up an intriguing story for the next episode. It’s just too bad most of the content leading up to it is uninteresting filler.
I say most because I would be crazy not to give props to the legitimately funny classroom scene in which Boruto, bound and gagged for trying to prank Iruka, is nominated by his fellow students to be the field trip leader against his will. Unable to speak, Boruto wildly thrashes around in an attempt to object, but even the honorable class rep looks the other way, leaving him high and dry. Shows like this often try to be funny and rarely hit the mark, but Boruto’s humor has been surprisingly on point as of late and I’m happy to see its jokes continue to land.
The Verdict
“The Turbulent Field Trip” looked like tedious filler in last week's preview, but by the episode’s end I found myself wanting to see more of the mysterious new Mist Village. This isn’t to say it is a strong episode (the first fifteen minutes are a bit of a bore), but as far as side stories go I can get behind this exploration of the wider Ninja World. I just hope next week’s show makes better use of its limited run time.
