Things just got crazier in the latest chapter of Dark Nights: Metal.
Warning: this article contains spoilers for Dark Nights: Metal #2!
This issue pitted Batman against the Justice League, with the Caped Crusader racing against the clock to stop the arrival of Barbatos while his teammates hunted his decoys. One particularly shocking moment came as Superman seemingly murdered Batman the same way he did Joker in the Injustice: Gods Among Us universe.
Thankfully, it turned out Supes was just letting Clayface know he was on to his disguise. Eventually, Superman and Wonder Woman caught up to the real Batman in the tomb of Prince Khufu. There Batman revealed his desperate plan to defend the world from the Dark Multiverse and its twisted god. Batman wants to use Darkseid (now stuck in infant form thanks to the events of Justice League: The Darkseid War) to zap himself back in time and stop Barbatos once and for all.
Unfortunately, Batman only managed to walk into a trap set by the Court of Owls. These faceless schemers are apparently loyal to Barbatos, and they want to use Batman to open the door between the DCU and the Dark Multiverse. As Batman learned, he's already been exposed to four of the five mystical metal alloys necessary to open that door - Electrum (in "The Court of Owls"), Dionesium (in "Endgame"), Prometheum (in "Superheavy") and Nth Metal (in Dark Days: The Casting). The Court members revealed the fifth and final of these metals - Batmanium.
Once exposed to Batmanium, Batman found himself becoming the catalyst for the very thing he hoped to prevent - the arrival of Barbatos and the seven Dark Knights.
Also of note, this issue briefly follows up on the big cliffhanger from the previous chapter, with Batman being confronted by Dream of the Endless. Readers don't learn exactly what the two characters discussed, but this issue makes it clear that Dream is attempting to aid Batman in the waking world as much as he's able.
