Spider-Man Homecoming: Every New Trailer Secret Revealed

We break down every Easter egg and secret -- including the latest tech updates to Spidey's suit -- in the film's third domestic trailer.

The third domestic trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming hit today, so let's break down all the finer points and reveals in the piece.

Right off the bat we see another new element of Tom Holland’s Spidey suit. The tech-based costume of course was designed for Peter Parker by Tony Stark, and each trailer has revealed a bit more of its capabilities. Here we see that it has a JARVIS-like AI interface, though one with a female voice. Also, 576 possible webshooter combinations! And you thought web balls were fancy...

It’s also notable that Peter has an internal display not unlike that of the Iron Man suit. Makes sense. The trailer also gives us our best look yet at how saggy the suit is before it vacuum-fits to Peter’s body… at the touch of a spider-symbol. We even get to see a couple of the aforementioned 576 webshooter combos when Spidey webs a thief to another web and leaves him dangling in the air.

The suit’s also got a parachute! In the comics, Spidey has often made himself a web chute when needed. But with all that tech, malfunctions are always a possibility. Take the emotive eye lenses that first showed up in Civil War but are on the fritz in the trailer shot when the wallcrawler comes crashing down in some little girls' backyard.

tracer

We’ve seen the spider-tracer, or spider-drone, in previous trailers, but here we get our best look of the little bugger yet. Man, he’s cute. Could this thing become a sidekick for Spidey? Think of the merchandising possibilities... As for the inside of the mask, also glimpsed here, it's not surprisingly very tech-looking. Pete’s buddy Ned appears to be trying to hack the suit, and that’s where he finds Stark’s “Training Wheels Protocol” which keeps Spidey from accessing all of the costume’s gadgets. This tracks with the whole idea that Stark is keeping Spider-Man in junior hero mode rather than letting him play with the big boys again. Much to Peter’s chagrin.

The half-rolled up mask is another iconic look from the comics, and the idea of Peter riding on top of a subway is also spot on. This scene in particular is also reminiscent of Spider-Man 2’s great runaway subway scene, though this ride is going in a far less dramatic fashion.

Elsewhere in the trailer we get a good look at the advanced weaponry used by the fake Avengers bank robbers. You gotta figure that tech was recovered by Michael Keaton’s junkman the Vulture from some superhero battle site, and that the goons Spidey encounters are involved with the Vulture in some way. And speaking of the Vulture, our first look of him in this trailer features the villain dropping Spidey from a really, really, really high place. We also get some good shots of his wings, which appear to be a full-on apparatus that he steps into rather than some kind of backpack that sprouts wings like his MCU counterpart the Falcon.

Bokeem Woodbine gives Peter the shock of his life in the piece. Marvel and Sony have been a little vague about who the actor is playing, but his weapon and outfit would seem to indicate that he’s the MCU’s version of the Shocker. And by the way, Homecoming’s producers have confirmed that his gauntlet is a modified version of Crossbones’ weapon from Captain America: Civil War.

Donald Glover also pops up in the trailer. We have no idea who he’s playing in the film. Is he giving Spidey advice in his scene here? Either way, he also provided the voice of the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man in the Ultimate Spidey cartoon. Zendaya’s character also remains a big mystery at the moment. All we know is she plays a classmate of Peter’s named Michelle, and the studios won’t confirm or deny whether or not she’s actually the new MJ.

At least one action set piece in Homecoming will take place in Washington, DC, at the Washington Monument. And another will involve the Staten Island Ferry getting split in half, and both sequences get some time in this third trailer. Check out the New Yorker at 1:53 cheering on Spidey, which is a total callback to the first Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movie when all those folks on the bridge were yelling at the Green Goblin and throwing stuff at him. That’s right. Nobody messes with Spider-Man!

The trailer closes on Peter in his original homemade suit in a spider-man vs. runaway jet moment. But don’t worry Spidey. We know you've got this.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released this July.
