Dragon Ball Super Episode 92 Review

When my enemy is my friend.

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

Preparations continue as the Tournament of Power draws ever closer. Opting to keep things relatively relaxed, Episode 92 focused again on the activities going on in several other universes, one of which set a new record for the long-running series. Not all was so well handled, though, as a silly moment involving our heroes ruined what could've been a more compelling storyline.

Toppo, his crew, and their heroism were highlighted again this episode. This is something Super has been pushing for awhile, so I hope it’s building to a meaningful payoff. They are clearly the good guys, so how will Goku feel having to eliminate them and destroy their universe? This is a question that hasn’t been explored in Dragon Ball before, so I’m interested to see how everyone reacts when they realize they’ve doomed good people from other universes.

An interesting issue was also explored this episode: what happens if someone cannot compete in the Tournament of Power? The answer for our heroes was to turn to Frieza. Although it seems unlikely that Frieza will actually be on the team for any meaningful amount of time, I do wonder how he might use this opportunity to ruin the plans of our heroes and perhaps the plans of Zen-Oh himself. To this day, Frieza remains one of the evilest, ruthless villains that has appeared on series, so I’m very curious to see what such a person would do given the chance to be around so many gods and powerful entities.

A landmark moment arrived this week as Caulifla went Super Saiyan, the first female in the entire series to reach this feat. This moment was a long time coming and I was glad to see them handle it with extra care. I particularly loved the visual representation of her gathering energy in her body. We’ve seen many methods of reaching Super Saiyan in the past, so I thought this subtle animation was a nice way to differentiate Caulifla’s first transformation from the likes of Goku or Vegeta.

Though different in stature, another moment in the making finally happened in this episode: the truth came out in, as everyone learned Goku had lied about the Tournament of Power. I had been looking forward to this, and for a few moments, it looked like the tension would cause things to fall apart. This was quickly erased though, as Bulma caved in and agreed to pay people, while Krillin was more than happy to help again after just a small plea from Goku. They’re all friends, I get it, but I was hoping this would amount to more than just a few seconds of tension. The world is at stake and Goku was blatantly lying to people. It feels like a missed opportunity to have this thread wrap up so neatly and suddenly.

The Verdict

Episode 92 continued the trend of showcasing events happening elsewhere and succeeded at that quite well. Seeing Caulifla going Super Saiyan for the first time was great, and learning more about Toppo and his crew is always good. Sadly, an opportunity was missed as Goku’s deceptive practices to recruit his friends was largely glossed over, closing off what could have been a very exciting story.
