Comedian and actor T.J. Miller has been getting more in demand thanks to his role on HBO’s hit comedy Silicon Valley and last year’s Deadpool, in which he played bartender and Deadpool’s “buddy,” Weasel. He also voices an Emoji named Gene in the upcoming animated The Emoji Movie, which actually makes more sense once you’ve seen some of it (as we have).
We spoke with Miller about the Sony Pictures Animation movie earlier this week, and while talking about his work in the “animated space,” he also mentioned how he’s rewatching the original Deadpool to prepare to reprise his role as Weasel in the sequel, which he’ll start shooting in August and September.
During our interview, he also told us about one possible storyline for the sequel that will team him with a memorable character from the first movie. “I shoot two chunks, and I haven’t heard much about the plot, but there’s one storyline with Karan Soni, who plays the cab driver and was in Office Christmas Party with me," he said. "There’s a pretty funny plotline between him and Weasel, but I don’t know if it’s going to make it into the movie. Even some of the stuff that they’ve just brought up to me, because I haven’t read the script—I think they’re still working on it—it’s already making me laugh, so I’m excited, but it’s tough, man. That movie is a hard act to follow.”
When asked about the pressures of creating a sequel and using that fact as fodder for jokes ala 22 Jump Street, he said he thinks that will play a factor, but he thinks Ryan Reynolds’ involvement will keep it going smoothly. “The other good thing about that film is that Ryan is really f*#king funny," said Miller. "Really fast, really smart, and knows that character. That character is kind of him. It’s the defining role in his career, it really is, and he really does like Wham, and he’s like Deadpool kind of, and he’s sarcastic, so between myself being a comedian and Weasel being a really funny character, it’s going to be very, very funny, we know that. The question is do the fans feel like it’s an appropriate follow-up and I think [writers] Rhett [Reese] and Paul [Wernick] and Ryan are like so passionate about making it better that it probably will be.”
He then joked, “I don’t give a f*#k. I’m in animated films, know what I’m saying? Those are just jobs in between animated features!”
Deadpool 2 is scheduled for June 1, 2018, but you can hear Miller’s voice in The Emoji Movie out on July 28.
