The upcoming X-Men spinoff film The New Mutants won't be your typical comic book movie.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, The New Mutants director Josh Boone revealed the film will go in an unusual horror direction and be unlike anything in the X-Men movie franchise so far. "We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe," Boone said. "There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different."
It appears a lot of inspiration for the film will come from artist Bill Sienkiewicz's work on The New Mutants comics that started from issue #18, which Boone described as a "surreal and impressionistic X-Men series" that feels "like Stephen King meets John Hughes."
Boone also spoke highly of the studio's interest in taking the X-Men franchise in new directions with spinoffs like The New Mutant, adding, "We love that Fox wants to make all these different X-Men spinoffs as drastically different as they can."
The New Mutants will star Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, while Anya Taylor-Joy will play the mutant Magik. Boone teased The New Mutants lineup last year, which is also expected to include Moonstar, Sunspot, Cannonball and Warlock.
New Mutants will open in theaters on April 13, 2018. It will be one of three X-Men films coming in 2018, with Deadpool 2 and Dark Phoenix also set to release next year.
