Today's game: Kingdom Hearts III.
Kingdom Hearts III footage hasn’t debuted since 2015, when Square Enix included a look at the sequel alongside this year’s Kingdom Hearts HD II.8: Final Chapter Prologue.
At the very least,Square Enix has debuted a few new screenshots from the game since then, including looks at what appears to be the sequel’s take on a Hercules/Olympus level, as well as a Final Fantasy VII-esque shot near Yen Sid’s Tower.
Kingdom Hearts 3 has been a long time in the making, with Kingdom Hearts 2 having released in 2006. But what makes our hype this year any different than the decade-plus of waiting? Well, aside from the drought of footage in recent months, Square Enix seems to have lain the groundwork to bring Kingdom Hearts 3 back into conversation.
The releases of Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and the Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix collection in the last couple of months serves as the ultimate primer to let players both new and old catch up on everything they need to know ahead of the third numbered entry in the franchise. Especially considering Final Chapter Prologue perfectly sets up Kingdom Hearts III, it feels like the time is right to reintroduce Kingdom Hearts III after Square confirmed its existence back in 2013.
Hopefully! Square has not publicly said either way whether Kingdom Hearts 3 will appear. The game was confirmed at an E3, and previous world reveals have also come from the yearly expo. So there’s certainly a precedent for more information to come during Sony’s press conference or from Square itself.
The sequel did, of course, skip E3 last year, with Square putting an emphasis on Final Chapter Prologue’s impending release. Square has also not been afraid to show off new information for the game at other conferences, whether that be PSX or D23. And considering game director Tetsuya Nomura said earlier this year that Kingdom Hearts III still has a ways to go, Sora’s next adventure may sit out this year’s E3 reveals.
