Earlier today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced the Injustice 2 Championship Series, a global esports program which will offer a $600,000 prize pool for competitors who pick up the sequel to NetherRealms Studios’ fighting game based in the DC comics universe.
The championship series is a joint partnership between GameStop, Electronic Sports League, Gamelta esports Professional League, Twitch, and PlayStation 4 entertainment system. Amateur and professional players in North America, Europe, and Latin America will get a chance to compete for a portion of the prize pool. WBIE announced a the following schedule:
The four-month online and offline season kicks off on Twitch with a live broadcast on May 26. It will identify the top 16 finalists from North America, Europe, Latin America. They will all advance to the series finals, which will take place on September 17 in Los Angeles.
For anyone not competing in the Injustice 2 Pro Series, these open online qualifier tournaments will be operated by the ESL and begin on June 4. Eight Regional Finals tournaments will take place at local GameStop retail locations on August 12, and it is the lead up to the Injustice 2 GameStop Hometown Heroes Finals at the GameStop Consumer Expo 2017 in Las Vegas on August 27.
The European competition (again for players who are not competing in the Pro Series) will open on May 20 for players in the Benelux Union, France, Germany, Nordic territories, Italy, Spain and U.K. who are not participating in the Injustice 2 Pro Series. The Injustice 2 Path to Pro Finals will be held online on August 19 with 12 finalists from the participating territories.
Online and offline qualifier tournaments will be held in Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Peru beginning in May, in this tournament that will be operated by Gamelta esports Professional League. The best players from each of the countries will battle in the Injustice 2 Liga Latina finals on August 13.
According to WBIE, Brazilian fans will have a chance to compete in a regional tournament to be announced in the future.
