"The Book of Swords," an upcoming anthology featuring stories from an array of different authors, will include a new Game of Thrones short story from George R. R. Martin.
As reported by Winter Is Coming, Martin's story, titled "The Sons of the Dragon," chronicles the history of the second and third Targaryen kings who ruled from the Iron Throne. Aenys I Targaryen and Maegor the Cruel were entirely different rulers, with the former being both wise and thoughtful while the latter was incredibly cruel.
This never-before released story is told in a historical fashion rather than the traditional narrative style of Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" novel series. The content of the story was pulled unused material the author wrote for "The World of Ice & Fire," which released in 2014 and serves as a companion book to his beloved fantasy series.
"The Book of Swords" will be released on October 10. Additional details, including pre-order information can be found on Penguin Random House's product page for the upcoming anthology.
Meanwhile, the seventh season of HBO's television series Game of Thrones will premiere on Sunday, July 16. Here's a look at everything we know about the final two seasons.
Additionally, we recently learned that HBO has closed deals to begin work on four potential Game of Thrones prequel spinoff series. Martin, who still has yet to finish The Winds of Winter, is involved as a screenwriter on two of the projects and will serve as an executive producer on whichever ones make it to series.
