Rising to the challenge.
Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.
It’s time for Gohan to show off the results of his training as he fights with his own father to see who is superior. Although not perfect, Episode 90 offered up a lot of exciting moments with father and son duking it out while the ending opened up the possibility that Gohan will soon join Vegeta and Goku as the leads for the series.
Dragon Ball has always been a vibrant series, with its flashy heroes and outrageous attacks, but Super stepped up its game during the fight this week. Strong design and animation helped convey the immense power levels that Gohan and Goku were achieving. In particular, I liked the scene where Gohan was flying straight up into the sky, a shining white light rushing towards the bluish red star that represented his father. Not only is it striking imagery, but shows off just how outrageous our heroes must look like to normal viewers.
What’s more striking than Gohan’s nurtured strength was how he conducted himself in the fight. Every time Goku let his guard down to talk, Gohan was there to try and hit him. I loved seeing this as Piccolo’s number one complaint before was that Gohan always let his guard down. We don’t always get to see such a clear example of evolution within a character, so having these moments where we see the direct results of Gohan’s training made for a great episode.
Although it was fairly light on story, I am excited by the implications that are made at the end of the episode. It’s strongly implied that Gohan will be joining Goku and Vegeta as a regular on Dragon Ball Super. Goku and Vegeta have had a lot of time at the front of the pack, and at this point, their dynamic is starting to run thin. There is only so much you can do with two heroes, so adding in Gohan to the mix is a wise idea. I’m also intrigued by what it means for Gohan, as he claimed that he could reach the same levels of power that both Goku and Vegeta have without having to become a Blue Super Saiyan.
As fun as the episode was, it had some issues. There were several shots that lingered a bit too long on uninteresting aspects of the fight or cuts that felt like they weren’t entirely necessary. The most frustrating thing was that Episode 90 fell into the trope Dragon Ball is known for: there was a lot of unnecessary screaming. I get it, there is some intense action happening on screen, but when the entire episode is filled with fighting, the screaming begins to take away more than it adds.
The Verdict
Episode 90 was all about bringing Gohan up to par with his father and it succeed in almost every way. We got a great fight out of it, as Gohan showed off the results of his training and some amazing visuals helped hammer home just how strong he and Goku have become. It wasn’t perfect, though. Some silly cuts and annoying amounts of screaming do hold back what is otherwise an amazing episode.
