Never a dull moment in the Secret Empire.

The saga of Hydra Cap took another dramatic turn in the latest issue of Secret Empire.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Secret Empire #2.

This issue established the basic conflict for Secret Empire. Following Hydra's destruction of of Las Vegas in issue #1, both Captain America and Hawkeye's teams are desperately searching for the shattered fragments of the Cosmic Cube that will allow them to rewrite reality. Cap wants to restore Hydra to its World War II-era glory, while the Avengers simply want to undo the destruction of the past few months.

Unfortunately, the Avengers still remain dangerously divided even at this critical stage. Black Widow is fed up playing superhero, and she's taken it upon herself to kill Cap and free the world from his regime. She even has some help in the form of the Champions.

This issue also offered a glimpse of the hellish existence New York's residents are facing while the entire city is trapped within the Dark Dimension. As the Defenders and Claire Temple deal with dwindling supplies and the increasingly dire threat posed by Baron Mordo's minions, Cloak and Dagger are doing their best to keep the city illuminated.

Luckily, there is hope on the horizon. This issue ended with a mysterious hero defending a woman from an attack by the Serpent Society. That hero was revealed to be none other than... Steve Rogers?

The implications of this reveal aren't clear yet. It could mean that there are now two versions of Steve Rogers in the Marvel Universe, the Hydra-affiliated evil Cap and the "real" Cap. But this sequence could also be taking place inside Steve's mind, similar to how Peter Parker fought to regain control of his stolen body during the Superior Spider-Man storyline. If the good part of Steve Rogers still exists within, that might explain why Cap was able to lift Mjolnir in the recent Secret Empire FCBD special.
