It's that time of year again: E3 2017 is just on the horizon. From June 10-15, we'll be covering the biggest games and hardware announcements of 2017 and beyond. While you can check out our continually-updated Games of E3 List, we're now going to start diving deeper. Every day leading up to the show, we'll be highlight the stuff we want to see and play at E3 2017.
Today's game: Star Wars Battlefront 2.
Tucked between a new teaser for The Last Jedi and footage from the new season of Star Wars Rebels, EA’s Star Wars Battlefront 2 made its official debut at this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim. Although the new trailer was light on actual gameplay, it did give us a great idea of where in the massive Star Wars galaxy Battlefront 2 would visit (and return to) next.
While the last game focused mostly on original trilogy content (aside from a bit of Force Awakens and Rogue One DLC) Battlefront 2 spans the eras of nearly every Star Wars film, including the prequels. Sure, the prequels are divisive films to Star Wars fans, but characters like Darth Maul and planets like Mustafar are undeniably awesome places for a Star Wars game to take place.
However, the most exciting part of Battlefront 2 is that it will actually have a dedicated single player campaign and original story this time around. Oh, and you play as the Empire elite special forces soldier Iden Versio, tasked with cleaning up the mess after Return of the Jedi’s Battle of Endor. Not physically cleaning it up, of course. Dead ewoks probably smell horrible. But we’re excited to see Iden and the rest of her squad take on rebels and Jedi on her road to revenge.
Never tell me the odds!
But seriously, nearly 100%.
Battlefront 2 is EA’s biggest game this fall and we haven’t seen nearly enough of it yet. At E3 2017, we expect EA to blow the blast doors off of Battlefront 2’s multiplayer modes, showing us exactly how new heroes like Rey and Kylo Ren will work in the grand scheme of the game. Battlefront 2 is apparently ditching the first game’s pricy, year long season pass of content drops, so we also hope to learn how EA plans to keep the game fun and exciting for months after it launches this November. And with Battlefront 2 releasing less than four weeks before Star Wars: Episode 8 hits theaters, it would be awesome to get a tease of some playable stuff from The Last Jedi. Fingers crossed for old man on the mountain Luke Skywalker or a fifty foot tall Supreme Leader Snoke hologram. Or Jar Jar. There was no way I was going to write this entire article without mentioning Jar Jar. I’m sorry.
Brian Altano is a host and producer at IGN. In case you couldn't tell, he kinda likes Star Wars.
