Hollywood may have avoided a strike, but we are still very much in the era of Peak TV. There’s so much good television programming that it’s impossible to keep up with it all. Even those of us who get paid to watch TV can’t find the time to watch everything.
That’s why we’re launching a new weekly column offering up our choices for the best shows to watch on TV and streaming services. Think of it as a curated experience. We will be recommending a variety of shows, including shows that don’t always get coverage on IGN. But with all of the shows, we’ll let you know why you need to be onboard for these series.
For our inaugural column, we’ve picked four series: a drama, a comedy, a sci-fi show, and an animated series.

The new adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s classic novel certainly feels more timely than it did back in the ‘80s. For this series, former Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss headlines the cast as Offred, a woman who has been forced to become the property of a powerful couple in a dystopian future where fertile women are treated like slaves. Moss is joined on the series by a very impressive lineup that includes Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, and Madeline Brewer.
Only four episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale are currently on Hulu, with new episodes debuting every Wednesday. So there’s still time to catch up on this show before it gets too deep into the season.

Now that Archer has moved to FXX, it’s been all too easy to lose track of one of our favorite animated comedies. For the eighth season, the show has once again completely reinvented itself. This time, Archer and his frenemies have been re-imagined in a ‘40s noir setting, but it actually makes sense within the context of the show. Even after the changes, Archer’s dark sense of humor remains intact. And we love it!
Archer is also one of the rare series that is streaming on both Hulu and Netflix. For most of its run, Archer has been a bitingly funny sendup of the spy genre with some of the most quotable jokes on TV. The first few seasons are especially hilarious, as they set the tone for the insanity that followed.

Everyone watches Doctor Who...except for everyone who doesn’t. Although Doctor Who fandom is at all-time high, there are still many viewers who haven’t yet discovered the joys of our favorite Time Lord. While the current tenth season on BBC America is the final run for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor, it’s also a fairly self-contained season arc that may not be as intimidating to potential fans.
There are multiple versions of the Doctor, all of whom are the same man with a new body and personality. That’s how the series has managed to stick around for so long. The previous nine seasons of the current Doctor Who series are on Amazon Prime, and you can start at the very beginning with Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor or skip ahead to the fifth season and follow Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor as a gateway into the show. But if you go the latter route, you should definitely work your way back into David Tennant’s run as the Tenth Doctor, starting with the end of season 2. No matter which Doctor you choose, there are many amazing time travel stories ahead. And it’s all perfectly “timey-wimey.”

Imagine if Anthony Bourdain's travel show was hosted by a hilariously selfish and clueless prick, and you’ll find that SeeSo’s original series, Hidden America with Jonah Ray fits the bill perfectly. While you may know Ray from his recent turn on Mystery Science Theater 3000, the newly released second season of Hidden America allows Ray to essentially play himself as the biggest jerk on the show...until he meets Anthony Bourdain himself in one of this season’s episodes.
Hidden America is actually a skit comedy disguised as a travelogue, and this season’s episodes include the story of a doomed straight edge punk rock band as well as an episode in Reno that keeps restarting because there’s nothing to do in Reno. The 30 minute episodes are the perfect size for binging, and you get through the new batch of episodes relatively quickly. We’re really hoping that this one gets a third season.
We’re always looking for the next great TV show as well, so send us your recommendations in the comment section below! Don't forget to come back next week for a new set of shows to watch next.
