Star Trek's New Characters Explained

From Klingons to Number One to whatever a Saru is, we break down the full team of actors and their characters.

This story has been updated with the latest information on Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek: Discovery has hit more than its fair share of bumps in the road so far, from the loss of showrunner Bryan Fuller to multiple delays. But now Discovery's first trailer has arrived, and we couldn't be more excited to head back to the 23rd Century.

Discovery's ensemble cast is shaping up to be one of the largest in a Star Trek series to date, comprising multiple new Starfleet crews, new Klingon villains and at least one familiar face in the form of Spock's father, Sarek (James Frain). We figured it was time to update our breakdown of who's who in the Star Trek: Discovery crew. Click through the slideshow below for the full team of actors and their characters:

You can read here why Star Trek: Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green's commitment to The Walking Dead could in part be why the new Trek has been delayed for a second time. We also recently spoke to co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman about the series, who described Michelle Yeoh's role as a "part that has so many dimensions to it and is so perfect for where we want to go over the course of the season and maybe even beyond."

Our own Jim Vejvoda also interviewed Doug Jones about playing new alien Lt. Saru. You can watch that chat here:

Star Trek: Discovery will debut sometime in the fall, and when it does its premiere episode will be on CBS in the U.S. before the rest of the series hits CBS All Access and other streaming services internationally. Get excited.
