Lucasfilm Story Group creative executive, Pablo Hidalgo has revealed new details about the Star Wars character, Captain Phasma.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Hidalgo spoke about the iconic chrome captain and why they decided to keep her face a mystery for the first film in the new trilogy.
“I think a big part of the allure of her character was just wondering what might be underneath,” says Hidalgo “It was only relatively recently that we wanted to commit to the idea that there was a human under there. The Force Awakens left that question, but as we got further into Last Jedi, as well as some other stories we’re thinking about with Phasma, we had to ask ourselves, ‘All right, do we agree there’s a human under there?’ ”
He also talks of the new weapon that Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie will be brandishing as Captain Phasma. The weapon, which "doesn't have a fancy name yet" seems to be less high tech than the usual blasters and lightsaber the Star Wars universe usually brings and instead comes in the form of a collapsible pole.
The understated weapon is no accident as Hidalgo states that it carries ties to Phasma's backstory which will be explored in a comic series and “is more low-tech than many would assume.”
You can get a look at the unmasked Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma and other members of the cast of The Last Jedi on these magazine covers as well as first looks at Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro's characters.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will hit theaters on December 15.
