Marvel director James Gunn has admitted to fans that he made a minor error during one of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s post-credits scenes. Gunn good-humouredly conceded the oversight during a Facebook Live session he conducted with fans of his film yesterday.
The scene in question, if you’re still here and/or aren’t concerned about spoilers from the film, is Stan Lee’s cameo at the end of the movie.
“I actually read the Marvel fan sites and the Marvel message boards out there and a lot of times people have ideas that are somewhat off-base or silly or whatever,” said Gunn. “But one thing I found very funny and interesting is the fact that people thought Stan Lee is a Watcher… and that all of these cameos that he’s doing are part of him being a Watcher. So I thought that was one of the greatest things the fans came up with.”
“So, Stan Lee, as a guy who is either a Watcher – or probably a guy who is working for the Watchers – was something that I thought was fun for the MCU.
“And yes, I know I made a mistake. People have written and asked me, and I'll own up to my mistake because Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 theoretically happens in 2014 which is before [Captain America Civil War]. And Stan Lee in the movie says, ‘That time I was the Fed Ex guy,’ which is what he is in Civil War. I screwed up; I wasn't thinking. That’s all that is.”
Gunn explained that, while shooting the scene with Lee, he kept yelling out all the different things Lee has done in his many cameos (including, “I was a DJ at a strip club one time” – which is what he was in Deadpool).
“But I'm going to say that – probably – Stan Lee used the guise of a Fed Ex guy more than one time,” laughed Gunn. “So it’s a mistake, but it can easily be explained away!”
Gunn’s complete Facebook Live chat, which runs for over an hour, is well worth checking out and contains a stack of insight into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Gunn’s thoughts and processes. The discussions around Quill’s relationship with Baby Groot, the importance of Rocket, the handling of the film’s key death, and an anecdote regarding Gunn’s respect for Sylvester Stallone’s professionalism are all especially interesting.
Gunn, who also helmed the original Guardians of the Galaxy, recently confirmed he will return to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s estimated USD$145 million US domestic opening makes it the fifth biggest MCU debut ever, unadjusted for inflation. That also represents a 54 percent increase over the first film’s debut back in 2014. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has subsequently pulled in an international total of USD$630 million.
