Secrets and lies and DJ-ing.
Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
Blaine, you sneaky devil!
Going into this episode, it did feel like Major taking the cure might lead to the reveal that Blaine was faking his memory loss - but I’d guessed it would only be that he just recently got his memory back with the most recent version of the cute, not that he’d been faking it for, essentially, the entire time. This is a pretty cool reveal as far as making all of Blaine’s actions the past year feel very different, and pondering just what he was really up to this whole time.
Plus, it means Don E was right! Go, Don E!
It will be very interesting to see how Blaine is handled going forward. Now we know that he never stopped being that evil bastard from Season 1 -- someone who hasn’t truly paid for his crimes in any notable way. That doesn’t mean he can't have regrets, of course, but it does change things in a huge way. I do hope iZombie can figure out a way to make it work in the long term that doesn’t make it feel like Blaine is being let off the hook or that it’s stretching credibility to still keep him around at all (certainly all of his actions with Peyton look pretty reprehensible right now), but I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out.
The whole “Sue and Dalia” bit with Major was amusing, simply because I'm guessing I'm not alone in thinking at first I was forgetting a storyline from the past when they were brought up in such an important manner - though finding out it was his mother and her girlfriend or wife made it a bit silly that neither he nor Liv ever said the word “mom” at any point.
“Hot Mess” brain in the meantime, was a blast. Rose McIver, per usual, was terrific showing Liv acting so dramatically different, here in a manner that was notably damaging and careless. While we may not want iZombie to come to an end, it was easy to see why Liv was ready, willing and able to take the cure when it seemed viable - if only it were available.
As we saw at the end, Blaine is up to no good with the blue solution, but who does have the cure? Blaine? Don E? Or maybe… Vivian? Right now, Filmore Graves feels a bit backburned, but perhaps this could be a way to tie them back into some of the main characters’ plotlines.
I liked finding out Peyton was on the case from last week with the dominatrix. iZombie’s cases/brains of the week tend to either be very self-contained or, as in the latter half of Season 2, very tied into the main storylines. Finding a middle ground, as they did here, is a fun variation, on a show that does a notably good job of juggling procedural and serialized elements.
On the humor side, Ravi listing British treats and “But it also turned you into a baby?” were among the highlights, but the entire “Good old Major” back and forth was especially charming and hysterical.
The Verdict
The main thrust of iZombie: Season 3 has felt a bit murky so far, with Fillmore Graves’ role not feeling completely defined after a strong introduction. But the revelations in this episode regarding Blaine are huge as far as the show’s long term storylines and characters are concerned, and we now have a lot of exciting elements in play - and for Liv, perhaps, a bigger underlying quest, now that she knows Ravi’s stolen cure actually works, if only she can get it back.
