Dirty old man.
Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.
The hunt for allies continues as Goku meets up with Master Roshi and Tien. Since this was the last recruitment episode, I expected things to end on a bang. Instead, Episode 89 ends things on a whimper, as it focuses less on the powerful allies Goku is trying to recruit and instead more on the clowny, perverted antics of Master Roshi.
The most interesting part of Episode 89 is what it shows us of Tien’s new life. He’s been out of the spotlight for a very long time, and it’s great to see that he’s moved on and opened up his own dojo and started training students. Tien is up there with Krillin for being one of the longest running side characters in the Dragonball franchise, so it was a pleasant surprise to see Super give him some new character growth. Although brief, I was also quite happy to see Chiaotzu was still with him.
Unfortunately, not much else is revealed about Tien. One thing I’ve enjoyed about the recruitment episodes is that they showcase everyone’s power in one form or another. I was rather disappointed then that we saw almost nothing of Tien’s current power or where he stands compared to Goku. I know we’ll get to see him fight later, but not showing it in the episode for Tien and his students is a missed opportunity.
The lack of interesting Tien moments is directly a result of too much Master Roshi. Episode 89 was structured in a way to make it seem like it was all for Tien, but Roshi ended up having considerably more going on. I certainly have nothing against Goku recruiting two characters at once, but the balance felt heavily skewed in the wrong direction. We already know plenty about Master Roshi as he still has semi-frequent appearances on Dragon Ball Super.
Master Roshi, for all the time he had on screen, didn’t offer much, though I did enjoy his brief fight with Goku. It demonstrated a profound amount of strength that even Goku had no idea about. Unfortunately, that’s about all I enjoyed, as the rest of his time on screen was almost solely dedicated to lusting after Yurin, the newly introduced female from the Crane School. It’s a long running joke that Roshi is quite the old pervert, but an entire plot line focusing on it is just too much. It went from funny to awkward to downright annoying by the end of the episode.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Caulifla. Already I find myself interested in her, not only because she’s likely to be the first female Super Saiyan, but also because of the way we’re introduced to her. Seeing Caulifla sitting on her throne, eating a giant piece of meat while surrounded by her gang made for a striking introduction and leaves me excited to see just what she can accomplish in future episodes.
The Verdict
Seeing Tien again is great, and I was pleasantly surprised by the ways his character has grown. However, Episode 89 instead glosses over much of that to instead focus on Master Roshi and his perverted antics. Not only were there far too many scenes about him lusting over Yurin, but they also did not mesh well with the other events happening in the episode.
