Attack On Titan Episode 32 Review

Share.

A titan sized cliffhanger.

The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

Attack on Titan held nothing back this week as Eren and Reiner battled it out below all their friends on the wall. The episode was more than just a fight, though. Many great, smaller moments along with some amazing animation helped make Episode 32 to the best episode since Season 2 began.

Although the whole episode was very well handled, the animation in the scene with the Colossal Titan was very impressive. The way it showed off our heroes zipping through the air, swirling around his attacks and flying through the steam near him was extremely well done. Not only was it visually pleasing, but it really showed off the scale of the fight and reminded us of how truly massive the Colossal Titan is compared to both the humans and other titans.

Eren returns to the spotlight with this episode as he fights off Reiner in a ferocious battle in the field below the wall. There were many great moments during this fight, but  Eren’s emotional weight amplified its impact. It was clear that he was mad and didn’t care about Reiner at all, and I loved it. This man was responsible for the death of countless people, including Eren’s mother, so I expected Eren to hold nothing back and it’s exactly what was delivered.

The tension throughout the beginning of the fight also allowed for some serious growth to occur within Eren. There were several moments where he seemed ready to give in to his rage, but surprisingly, he calms down and gets things under control. This was a huge moment for him as it finally shows significant growth for his character, letting us know that he can, in fact, be something other than a rampaging monster. Even though he is part of the central cast, Eren has been trapped in his angst for some time. He’s always being depicted as incredibly angry or confused. Finally, he got to shed that persona as he confidently begins controlling the situation, working with his allies and even believing in himself.

Even with such an intense fight happening, it was a subtle moment that really made me smile this week. When Hange Zoe landed on Eren and spoke to him, she got incredibly embarrassed when Eren answered back. This was such a wonderful scene, as even in the middle of combat, it shows off her love and affection for the titans. Having a titan answer her must have been a dream come true.

The Verdict

Episode 32 is exactly what I want from Attack on Titan. It provided an amazing fight, smart storytelling, and funny moments to break up the tension when needed. Great animation around the Colossal Titan really helped spice things up, and finally seeing Eren grow out of his angry, confused shell helped push this to be the best episode in Season 2 thus far.
