Time to go home.
Secrets are being revealed and lives are being saved as Episode 31 wastes no time diving into things. After so much build up, learning some truths is exciting, and they reveal a lot about the strange events that have been going on throughout the series. However, poor execution of these scenes and an awkwardly blunt reveal leave much to be desired.
It seems Ymir has more to do before she passes on. I did find it a little tedious that Historia had to try and convince Hange Zoe that Ymir was on their side. The proof was clear and there were countless witnesses to the event. Obviously this is meant to tie back in with Eren and how he was treated upon his reveal as a titan, but at this point in the series that doesn’t make much sense. Humanoid titans are no longer an unknown, and it seemed odd there would be any doubt about Ymir’s allegiance given everything she just did.
The big reveal this week is that Reiner and Bertolt are the Armored and Colossal titan. My favorite part about the reveal is how they connected it to previous unusual events. During the flashback, it was interesting to see the group piecing together the idea of their comrades actually being their enemies. Not only does it make the reveal better, but helps to explain some of the strange events from the past, like how Reiner escaped from the female titan’s hand.
Consistency is something the big reveal did not handle well, though. We’re led to believe that Reiner is struggling internally and that he opens up about his secret because his mental state is deteriorating. However, over the last few episodes he’s seemed fine and, in fact, had a moment where he was swooning over Historia. It strikes me as odd that over the course of a few hours he would go from wanting to marry Historia, to suddenly risk hurting her by turning into a titan and abducting her closest friend. This sudden turn of events made the big reveal not feel earned at all.
The surprisingly blunt approach Episode 31 took to delivering this information hampered its impact. There was virtually no set up within the episode, and just like Bertolt, I was incredibly surprised when Reiner started blurting out his secret. Revealing something of this magnitude should be a spectacle, not a casually tossed out piece of information atop a wall.
Although the reveal was underwhelming, it does leave open many exciting options. It’s clear that some far off land has found the secret to making powerful humanoid titans. The thought of seeing this place, and how it might tie into Eren and his father have me excited for the future of the series.
The Verdict
Although filled with interesting moments, Episode 31 struggled with consistency. Secrets were revealed in a sudden, unexpected way with little reason for them to happen, while other moments seemed to clash with known norms in the Attack on Titan universe. Although I am still excited for what’s next, Episode 31 did not have the impact I was looking for from such a giant revelation.
