This... is American Idol, now at ABC.
ABC has officially announced that it is reviving the long-running Fox reality singing competition and will bring it back for the 2017-2018 TV season. For more on what won't be coming back next season, check out IGN's 2017 list of cancelled and endangered shows. No hosts or judges have been announced as of this time. Former Idol host Ryan Seacrest is now currently co-hosting ABC's morning show Live! With Kelly and Ryan.
"American Idol is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon," ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey said in a statement accompanying the announcement. "ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base. We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realizing their dreams."
American Idol ran for 15 years on Fox, from 2002 - 2016, garnering 67 Emmy nominations and nine wins, while producing award-winning artists who produced 450 Billboard No. 1 hits, including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, and Chris Daughtry.
Word of an American Idol revival at ABC broke last week when word of a framework of a deal was in place between ABC and Idol production company FremantleMedia.
"ABC’s passion and enthusiasm make them a perfect home for American Idol. We are excited to be partnering with them to discover the next generation of talented artists," FremantleMedia's CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz said in a statement.
American Idol will join ABC's stable of reality programming including Dancing With the Stars and The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.
