7 Characters We Want in Vol. 3

A third film in the Guardians of the Galaxy series is already planned, so here are some characters who need to join up next.

Note: Now that Guardians Vol. 2 is out, we figured it was a great chance to revisit our character wish list for Vol. 3. Read on for all our picks...

Three years ago, the Guardians of the Galaxy movie took everyone by surprise on its way to becoming one of Marvel Studios’ breakout hits. Few expected this collection of cosmic misfits to resonate with the general public, and yet director James Gunn and the rest of the creative team successfully made it happen alongside an impeccably cast group of performers. And now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is also proving to be a hit.

It’s no surprise that Marvel is already looking ahead at making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But one of the biggest questions about Vol. 3 is who should join the Guardians next? The team is already getting pretty crowded with Mantis, Yondu, and even Nebula hanging out with the team in Vol. 2. We don’t expect everyone from Vol. 2 to stay with the Guardians for the third movie, so there probably will be room for some new additions to the team. The following seven characters are the ones that we want to see, but feel free to share your selections in the comments section too!

Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 follow.

Moondragon

Moondragon may not necessarily be a fan favorite, thanks to her terse and acerbic personality, but she is actually the most natural addition to the cast because in the comics she is Drax’s daughter. In the MCU, Drax is an alien instead of a transformed human. This means that his daughter would probably also be an alien. It’s not unheard of for characters who were previously thought to be dead to suddenly show up in the present. Remember, we’ve only been told that Drax’s family is dead. We’ve never actually seen it happen.

Moondragon

Moondragon, daughter of Drax

Giving Drax an adult daughter could be a lot of fun, as Moondragon and Drax have never really been that close in the comics. That tension could make for good drama, and even some comedy if Drax turns out to have a better handle on metaphors than his daughter does.

Phyla-Vell

If Moondragon is around, then Phyla-Vell should also be on the team. And not just because they’re lovers, although that would be a first for the big screen MCU. Phyla-Vell deserves to be there because she’s a pretty awesome heroine in her own right, and she’s the daughter of Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel. We wouldn’t be shocked at all if Mar-Vell shows up in the Captain Marvel movie, and it would be a nice touch if his daughter appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Phyla-Vell

Phyla-Vell has had a few different power sets during her time as a hero, including a stint as Captain Marvel. But we think she works best as Quasar, the protector of the universe and the wielder of the cosmic bands. As an additional upside, her appearance in the movie would probably encourage Marvel to resurrect Phyla in the comics after her untimely death.

Adam Warlock

Obviously Guardians Vol. 2 teased Adam Warlock during the end credits, and James Gunn has also confirmed that the character is coming to the MCU. And while he can certainly carry his own stories, it’s less clear whether Warlock can carry a film. Fortunately, Warlock has a history as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and it’s the natural place to put him if he’s not going to get his own franchise. (Though it seems likely he'll be a villain for at least part of his first appearance under the guidance of Ayesha).

Adam Warlock may be one of the most powerful heroes in the galaxy.

Adam Warlock may be one of the most powerful heroes in the galaxy.

The tone of Jim Starlin’s Warlock stories tended to be a bit overly serious. But somehow, we suspect that Warlock could be used as a more comedic figure in the third Guardians movie. That’s not because Warlock is a joke -- far from it. He may be one of the most powerful heroes in the galaxy. But he probably won't be used to being around the insanity that the Guardians tend to bring with them. He could be the straight man of this franchise! Angela is a fairly recent addition to the Marvel Universe, after a complex history as a creator-owned character in Todd McFarlane’s Spawn. But now that she’s a Marvel character, Angela is both the sister of Thor and a trusted member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. That makes her one of the ideal candidates to join the team on the big screen.

Angela

As an Asgardian, Angela can be the link to that corner of the MCU (assuming that there is still an Asgard after Thor: Ragnarok), and she’s a pretty powerful heroine as well. If Karen Gillan wasn’t already playing Nebula, she would have been perfect for Angela.

James Gunn has actually said that he wanted to use Bug in the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but he wasn’t able to because of rights issues with the character. In the Marvel Universe, Bug was one of the characters in the Micronauts who was able to stick around, thanks to the changes that were made to his design, name, and personality. But that may not be enough to get him into the MCU… although Marvel Studios has done character swaps with other studios before.

Bug, formerly of the Micronauts

Bug, formerly of the Micronauts

That’s unfortunate, because Bug was also a member of the proto-Guardians team that debuted in 2007’s Annihilation: Conquest -- Star-Lord miniseries. He would be one of the weirdest heroes on the team, and that is saying something. Bug brings a lot of inherent humor to the table, and we’d like to see him onscreen even if the franchise isn’t hurting for more comedy.

Cosmo, the intelligent and telepathic Russian cosmonaut dog, has already appeared in the first Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2. Much like Howard the Duck, Cosmo resided in the Collector’s collection... until it blew up. But we didn’t get to see Cosmo use his powers or display his personality. Cosmo can actually be quite funny, and he’d fit in well with the team just as he did in the comics.

Don't mess with Cosmo.

Don't mess with Cosmo.

Alternately, we’d love to see Cosmo assume the role of Knowhere’s new head security chief. His telepathic abilities make Cosmo an unexpected powerhouse, and it would be hilarious to see him put Drax or one of the other alien bruisers in their place.

Yes, Iron Man should be on the Guardians of the Galaxy team... and there’s a precedent for it happening in the comics! Think about it: We’re not likely to get too many more Marvel movies out of Robert Downey, Jr. once Avengers: Infinity War and the currently untitled fourth film are released. But potentially, Downey may be up for a supporting role in something fun outside of the Avengers movies.

Iron Man joined the Guardians in the comics for a time.

Iron Man joined the Guardians in the comics for a time.

In the Marvel Universe, Tony Stark was invited to join the modern Guardians team after they joined forces with the Avengers against Thanos. That history could repeat itself in the MCU, and it would be very amusing to see Iron Man as the fish out of water on alien worlds. Maybe that could even help Stark deal with the trauma of his last visit to outer space in The Avengers. Either way, we want to see Iron Man on the team. Make it happen, Marvel!
