The Gifted Features a Mutant Power Combo

C-c-c-combo!

The next episode of The Gifted will have huge stakes as the mutant underground makes a play to rescue Polaris and Reed during a Sentinel Services prisoner transport. The teaser for the episode shows just about every major character present for the big confrontation with lots of mutant powers and fiery explosions, but before all that, the Strucker kids take some time to practice using their powers together. We have an exclusive preview of that scene along with some commentary from The Gifted showrunner Matt Nix.

Take a look at the clip:

As you can see, siblings Lauren and Andy are able to use their abilities in conjunction to take Andy’s unwieldy, destructive power and precisely aim it with Lauren’s bubblewrap shields. Nix teased that this will prove key to giving the rescue mission a shot at success.

“The idea is that the mutant underground, in order to rescue Polaris and Reed, need to do something particularly difficult. They need to be able to stop a prisoner transport that's moving and they don't really have any way to do it that isn't going to expose everyone to danger, and the Strucker children figure out if they can use their powers together, they might be able to pull off what everybody else can't do,” Nix said.

Watching the Strucker kids combo their powers for the first time might seem familiar to X-Men comic book fans because it’s similar to how Fenris operates. In the comics, Fenris is comprised of siblings Andrea and Andreas von Strucker, children of supervillain Baron von Strucker, and they can only use their powers together, although they must specifically be holding hands to harness their gifts. The going theory is that Lauren and Andy are either adaptations of these characters or are at least related to them. You’ll recall the mysterious scientist Roderick Campbell pulled up a specific brother-sister mutant duo from years past, so perhaps they are Fenris and Lauren and Andy are their relatives.

“Anybody who is speculating along those lines, I would say you're definitely on the right track, but it's not quite as simple as that,” Nix responded when we ran the theory by him. “Obviously in the comics Fenris works a particular way, and let's just say, we're very aware of that. I'll just say, there's a lot more story coming along those lines and it goes a lot deeper than a casual glancing reference to the idea of a brother and sister with Strucker in their last name. Anybody who is thinking along those lines, keep watching, because it goes real deep with that.”

Episode 4 of The Gifted, titled “eXit Strategy” airs on Monday at 9:00 p.m. EST.
