China Can’t Save Blade Runner 2049 From Being a Flop

Earning just $2.4 million in its debut on Friday.

The debut of Blade Runner 2049 in China this week won't be enough to save Director Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi sequel from being a flop.

As reported by Forbes, the film earned a mere $2.4 million in its debut on Friday at the box office in China. As such, it's expected to make roughly $7-$8 million over the weekend, and $15-$20 million total in the country.

Blade Runner 2049 was not a cheap film to make, boasting a reported production budget of $150 million before marketing costs.

The film has earned just shy of $200 million worldwide, with $77 million of those earnings coming from North America. Despite the glowing reception Blade Runner 2049 received from critics, the movie underwhelmed in its opening weekend in North America, debuting well below expectations.

Meanwhile, Geostorm was the box office leader on Friday in China. The Gerard Butlet-led disaster movie, which flopped in its North American debut and is projected to lose $50-$100 million, earned $10.1 million.
