Switch Expected to Outsell Wii U's Lifetime Total by 2018

Switch sales currently sit at 7.63 million.

Nintendo projects Switch will sell 14 million units by the end March 2018, which would surpass Wii U's lifetime sales total of 13.56 million units.

The company's updated forecast, released as part of its most recent financial report, shows Nintendo expects to nearly double Switch's current sales total of 7.63 million units in the next six months. (Note: This latest Switch figure doesn't account for October sales.)

Following strong hardware sales throughout 2017—the console has topped the NPD charts in four of the six months of its availability—Nintendo's new estimate for Switch is up 40 percent from its previous forecast of 10 million units sold by next March.

With these new projections, and considering Wii U production ended globally earlier this year, it's likely Switch will outsell its predecessor during its first year on the market.

Nintendo also revealed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold 4.7 million units on Switch, bringing the console's software sales total to over 27 million.

Meanwhile, lifetime sales for 3DS are just shy of 69 million units, with software sales over 343 million.
