Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon: Suspected Red and Blue Location Is Actually a New Area

Kanto no-go.

An image that led some fans to believe that Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon would include a trip to Kanto isn't what they'd hoped - although the game's director would not rule out a connection to the setting of Pokemon Red and Blue.

IGN asked about the image from the game's story trailer (shown in the tweet below) - which looked like a new take on Lt. Surge's gym from the original games - and, after some discussion, Ultra Sun and Moon director Kazumasa Iwao came up with a slightly hazy reply:

"What you’ve seen in that particular image is a new place to visit in [Sun and Moon location] Malie City, which, while we were designing it, we did have some thoughts of the Kanto region. But any more than that is a little difficult to say that at the moment, so look forward to playing that."

In Sun and Moon, Malie City was where players met Samson Oak - the cousin of the original games' Professor Oak - which could go some way to providing an explanation. Samson bears a striking resemblance to his Kanto cousin - it may be that this new area also includes Alolan takes on Kanto's locations.

Alongside the new area (whatever it turns out to be), Ultra Sun and Moon will also include an alternate storyline, extra photo features and activities, and a swathe of new and altered monsters to capture.

The new entries in the Pokemon RPG series will be released on November 17, both as separate games, and a "Veteran Trainer's dual Pack" that includes each version.
