After a series of leaks and reports, 2017's Assassin's Creed Origins has officially been revealed, bringing with it a new assassin, a new time period, and more for the longrunning franchise. It will arrive on Xbox One and PS4 October 27, 2017.
As previous leaks have suggested, Origins will take place in ancient Egypt. Creative Director of Ubisoft Jean Guesdo explained the Egypt setting, calling it “3,000 years of history and mystery.”
Origins will feature a new protagonist, Bayek, an “Egyptian sheriff.” Bayek is coming back to Siwa, his home town, to kill a fake oracle named Medunamun.
Other leaks suggested the return of controllable boats as well as more details that pointed to the Egyptian setting. (For more on Assassin's Creed's history, check out IGN's look at all of the previous Assassin's Creed leaks.)
Ubisoft did not release a mainline Assassin's Creed game in 2016, confirming earlier reports that the next entry would not launch until at least 2017. Official word from Ubisoft explained that the company wanted to take the time "to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed." Later in 2016, Ubisoft VP of Editorial, Tommy François, told IGN that the company was willing to take the time needed to bring "more quality, more polish" to the next Assassin's Creed.
The company did, however, recently announce plans earlier this year for the next Assassin's Creed title to be released in its current fiscal year, which runs through March 31, 2018.
The last mainline entry in the franchise was Assassin's Creed Syndicate in 2015, which IGN gave an 8.2, saying "Syndicate asks you to take London back in a way puts the last few games to shame."
