Firewatch for Xbox One Release Date Announced

Take an audio tour of the Wyoming wilderness.

Firewatch will release for the Xbox One on September 21, developer Campo Santo announced today. A major, free update for the game on all platforms is also expected to release on the same day.

The free update will introduce what is essentially a commentary mode to the game, but one that is built into the Wyoming wilderness that is Firewatch's setting. Players will be able to discover over 100 kiosks and tapes that explain Firewatch's development, the reasoning behind certain decisions, and more from Campo Santo.

Players can keep track of what they collect via a checklist on the in-game map, which lists all of the tapes available on each day of the game's story.

This behind-the-scenes tour that is being built into the game won't play out just through audio — set pieces within the world will also offer a look at the game's development, showing how the environments come together or how the protagonist Henry is animated, for example. Take a look at how the audio and visual commentary is embedded in Firewatch's world in the images below:

Additionally, Campo Santo is introducing a free-roam mode to Firewatch, allowing players to explore the game's world and discover some secrets embedded in the world. This new mode will hit the Xbox One on September 21 and then come to other platforms in the weeks after.

Firewatch, which sold half a million copies in its first month, debuted on PS4 and PC on February 9, and IGN's review at the time noted that the game is "among the very best of the first-person narrative genre, and it reminds us what video game storytelling is capable of in the right hands."
