TWD: Eugene's Take on Negan Is Very Different in the Comics

Is he really "Negan"?

This article contains full spoilers for The Walking Dead's latest episode, "Hostiles and Calamities," so read on at your own risk.

Is Eugene really "Negan"? That's the biggest question to come out of The Walking Dead, and it's not one that's easily answered by looking to the AMC drama's source material.

"Hostiles and Calamities" did a pretty darn good job convincing the audience that Eugene, self-professed coward that he is, would turn to the dark side upon his arrival at The Sanctuary. Surrounded by people who only know he managed to make bullets without the typical manufacturing resources, Eugene quickly slipped into an old routine of pretending that he was an esteemed scientist before the zombie apocalypse -- and he seems to really like playing that person in Negan's world.

But is this all an act to survive until Rick inevitably comes to rescue him, or is Eugene fully in the Team Negan mindset? Typically these are the sorts of questions where we can turn to the comics for answers, but in the case of Eugene, his storyline played out pretty differently when he was captured by Negan on the page.

Click through our gallery below to see how the fallout from Eugene's capture is significantly different in The Walking Dead comics, but how that doesn't necessarily mean big changes in the aftermath. Due to the graphic nature of both The Walking Dead comics and TV show, the slideshow below contains strong language.

The Walking Dead show seems to be doing a longer arc with Eugene's capture than the comics did, which could offer some really interesting development for Josh McDermitt's character. Our thought is that, like the comics, the show is heading toward a partnership between Eugene and Dwight that likely will play into Rick's anti-Negan agenda. Even if Eugene is pro-Negan now, we have a good feeling he'll fall into line when Rick shows up, if not actively working to set up Rick's success from the inside.
