Suicide Squad Just Won an Oscar

Suicide Squad is officially an Academy Award-winning film.

The David Ayer-directed film took home the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hair Design, marking the first Academy Award for the DC Extended Universe. Neither 2013's Man of Steel nor 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were nominated for Oscars.

Suicide Squad beat out Star Trek Beyond and Swedish drama A Man Called Ove.

IGN's Brian Altano summed up the audience reaction to the win pretty succinctly:

Though this is the first movie in the DCEU to win an Oscar, it's not the first DC movie to take home a golden statuette. Heath Ledger notably won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for The Dark Knight, which also took home the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing. Tim Burton's Batman won for Best Art Direction. Additionally, Batman Begins, Batman Returns and Batman Forever were all nominated for Oscars.
