Oscars' Accountants Blamed for Best Picture Mix-Up

The Academy and PwC have released statements of apology.

Following the big mix-up at the 89th Annual Academy Awards, where presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced the incorrect winner for Best Picture, the Academy has released a statement of apology, explaining the cause of the issue.

After apologizing to all of those involved, as well as those who tuned in around the world to watch the Oscars, the Academy said that professional services network PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is at fault for the error.

"For the last 83 years, the Academy has entrusted PwC to handle the critical tabulation process, including the accurate delivery of results. PwC has taken full responsibility for the breaches of established protocols that took place during the ceremony," the Academy said.

The circumstances surrounding the error are being looked into further, as the Academy decides what sort of action needs to be taken to ensure that "the integrity of the Oscars and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences" is upheld in the future.

PwC released the following statement on Twitter, explaining how the wrong envelope was handed to presenters Beatty and Dunaway, and apologizing to the Academy, hosts, ABC, and cast and crews of La La Land and Moonlight:

The Oscar for Best Picture was incorrectly presented to La La Land, and while the cast and crew were delivering their acceptance speeches on stage, it was revealed that there was a mistake and Moonlight was actually the winner.
