Lethal Weapon star Danny Glover was originally being eyed to play Raiden in New Line's original 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon has revealed.
On the latest episode of our monthly interview show IGN Unfiltered, the Mortal Kombat co-creator discussed the creative consulting he did on the film, noting they had some "pretty interesting discussions" with the studio, including Glover's potential involvement. "They had some pretty wild suggestions for characters, I remember them saying they wanted Danny Glover to be Raiden," he said.
Boon also mentioned that "Kano originally just had like a pirate eye patch," to which he responded, "no, no, no, he's gotta have the big plate." After running the character by focus groups it became clear that fans wouldn't have been happy with an eye patch. According to Boon, this type of feedback from Mortal Kombat players "course corrected them a few times."
New Line currently has a reboot film in the works from producer James Wan. Greg Russo wrote the latest draft of the script, and this past November, Simon McQuoid was in talks to direct.
