Australian Video Game Industry Nudges $3 Billion for 2016

Digital sales up, DLC sales up, traditional retail sales down.

Australia’s Interactive Games & Entertainment Association has today announced that the Australian video game industry generated $2.958 billion in revenue in 2016. This represents a four per cent increase in overall sales from 2015.

The total figure is made up of $1.893 billion in digital and mobile sales and $1.065 billion in traditional retail sales.

Digital sales are up 19 per cent and although the larger portion of the final sum remains mobile games ($988 million) the biggest growth came from downloads (full games and DLC). Downloads overall are up 26 per cent, and DLC is up 31 per cent within that.

Games classified MA15+ sold the highest number of units in 2016.

Data from NPD Group Australia indicated traditional retail sales decreased by 16 per cent from 2015, across both software and hardware. However, with total revenue up four per cent, the IGEA notes this retail decline has been outweighed by the increase in digital sales.

Games classified MA15+ sold the highest number of units in 2016, but 55 per cent of games sold received an unrestricted classification (G, PG, or M).

Working with both NPD Group Australia and analyst firm Telsyte, the IGEA has been publishing a yearly report card for the Australian games industry since 2008/2009. Since the IGEA began providing this yearly snapshot total yearly revenue has increased by $1 billion.
