Brian Bendis Takes Over DC's Superman Comics

A new era dawns for the Man of Steel.

DC Comics has finally revealed what readers can expect from writer Brian Michael Bendis. The newly DC-exclusive writer will be taking control of the Superman franchise this summer, writing both the monthly Superman and Action Comics titles as well as a weekly miniseries called Man of Steel.

As revealed last month, Bendis will make his official DC debut as part of the anniversary issue Action Comics #1000, which will debut on April 18. From there, Bendis' Superman run begins in earnest with Man of Steel, which will ship weekly starting in May. The series will pair Bendis with a number of prominent DC artists, including Ivan Reis, Evan “Doc” Shaner, Ryan Sook, Kevin Maguire, Adam Hughes and Jason Fabok. According to DC, Man of Steel will explore the destruction of Krypton and Superman's rise as a hero, introducing a major new villain with direct ties to Krypton in the process. Bendis will also team with artist Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez for a Man of Steel prelude story in May's DC Nation #0.

"The Man of Steel story will debut a huge new villain, a blockbuster villain who connects deeply to Superman’s origin story and to his birthright," Bendis told Forbes. "We’re going to dig in very hard, this is one of my goals, to be a additive to Superman as possible. The characters we debut right away, including this new villain, will send ripples of horror across the entire Superman family and beyond!"

Bendis will then take over Superman and Action Comics in July. Superman will relaunch with a new #1 issue on July 1 and reunite Bendis with Reis again. Action Comics will continue at issue #1001 on July 25, pairing Bendis with current Superman co-writer/artist Patrick Gleason. Interestingly, it appears that both books will be shifting from a twice-monthly schedule to a traditional monthly format in July. Is this a sign that DC is moving away from the twice-monthly approach popularized during Rebirth?

"The fallout of Man of Steel #6 is enormous," Bendis told Forbes. "It's some of the biggest status quo changes to Superman literally since Crisis. So we'll be launching Superman with a brand new #1, and that's going to be very Superman-focused and big DC action stories. Action Comics will be launching with #1001, I'm very happy to say, and that will be focused more on Clark and Metropolis and the Daily Planet, and how the world of Superman effects the world of DC."

These aren't the only DC projects in the works for Bendis. He'll also be bringing his entire library of Jinxworld creator-owned titles to DC (including Powers, Scarlet, Jinx and Torso). DC will publish new digital editions of many of these books in spring 2018, with brand new series for Powers, Scarlet and The United States of Murder to follow.

Not only that, Bendis will be overseeing an entirely new curated imprint at DC, similar to Gerard Way's Young Animal line and Warren Ellis' Wildstorm reboot. This imprint will feature a mix of existing DC characters and entirely new creations.

Clearly, Bendis will be keeping plenty busy as he settles into his new role at DC. Let us know what you think about these announcements in the comments below.
