Writer Scott Snyder is currently in the midst of his most ambitious Batman story yet thanks to Dark Nights: Metal, but that didn't stop him form teasing his next (and potentially last) Batman project at NYCC this weekend. Snyder and artist Sean Gordon Murphy are planning to reunite on a new series called Batman: Last Knight.
Snyder revealed first details about the series at DC's Batman panel yesterday, calling it "my last Batman story for a long time." Last Knight will take place in a dystopian future version of Gotham City, one where a strangely youthful Batman awakens after a long sleep to find his city in ruins and a talking Joker head attached to his belt. Snyder compared the book to classic manga series Lone Wolf & Cub.
It's not clear if the series is meant to fit into current DC Rebirth continuity, but Snyder did reveal that Last Knight started life as a story arc on All-Star Batman before growing in scope. Snyder also said that he was inspired by writer Grant Morrison, who told him that great superheroes need a birth and a death. Snyder already chronicled Batman's birth in the "Zero Year" storyline, so Last Knight will apparently handle his death.
Snyder didn't give a potential release date for the series, and we wouldn't expect Last Knight to materialize before mid-to-late 2018 at the earliest. Snyder and artist Greg Capullo are still hard at working crafting Dark Nights: Metal, which isn't expected to wrap up until spring 2018. And DC only just published the first issue of Murphy's miniseries Batman: White Knight this past week.
