The Gifted Actress on Portraying Blink's Powers

A very different Blink than the one we saw in Days of Future Past.

Fox's The Gifted sees the second live-action portrayal of Blink, with the character having previously appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past. And for Jamie Chung, who portrays the character in Fox's mutant drama, giving life to the character's struggles as a mutant was key in this iteration.

"In terms of her powers, it's trigged when she's scared," Chung explained in an interview to IGN ahead of the show's debut. "For her, it's really straining. So what you'll see in the series is, if you were to do something so physically straining, what would you do in the aftermath?"

And as evidenced in the pilot episode, "eXposed," Blink is very much at a point in her mutant career in which producing her teleporting portals is very much a physical strain. Chung says this is, in part, due to Blink not being "at her full capacity," yet, unlike the version Fan Bing Bing portrayed in the 2014 X-Men film.

"[In] Days of Future Past, their interpretation of Blink was someone who was very much in control of her powers. someone who didn't have a lot to say but was a team player," Chung said. "In our interpretation of Blink, she's living in a world that discriminates against mutants, so I can only assume she was bullied as a child because she could never hide the markings of being a mutant. And so she has this toughness to her..."

Chung said "assume" because, at the time, she had only read the scripts of the first three episodes, expressing as much excitement for finding out what happens to her character as she hopes viewers will have. But the show will uncover a bit of Blink's mysterious past, as it will for many of the show's core characters.

[Showrunner Matt Nix] did confirm that there are going to be flashbacks dedicated to each character to dive into them," Chung explained, noting that some of those flashbacks will also explore what has led to a world without the X-Men present.

Chung is also interested in looking into Blink's future, particularly as it relates to the mutant group she has latched onto and its plans — as well as whether Blink will be part of them.

"What's the end goal, what's utopia [for them]...we're playing with the idea of powers and what they can do and what if they're used not in an ethical way" Chung said of the ideas core to that group's journey. "[Blink is] struggling with the idea of belonging... it's the strangest thing for her, and she's always been on her own. Maybe she'll stay and maybe she'll go."

The Gifted airs Mondays on Fox.
