The Gifted Actor Teases What's Next for the Struckers

What's next for the Strucker family?

The Gifted's season premiere, "eXposed," leaves the Strucker family in a difficult predicament, and the family's patriarch, Reed Strucker (Stephen Moyer), has a tough road ahead of him.

Spoilers for The Gifted's season premiere follow. Read our spoiler-free review if you haven't seen it.

Reed Strucker's life is thrown for a loop when, after discovering his kids are mutants, he has to abandon his job as a mutant-persecuting district attorney to help them free the country in safety. His efforts, in the episode's climax, get his family to temporary safety on one side of a Blink portal, while he's stuck with the mutant-hunting Sentinel Services and Agent Jace Turner (Coby Bell). But his situation isn't a death sentence just yet, as he proves useful to the government agency.

"The Sentinel Services are going to try to use him to get to the family, he's their pawn," Moyer explained in an interview with IGN earlier this year about what lies ahead for Reed. "But he's a smart guy. he's a prosecutor himself, he knows how these things works."

While Moyer couldn't specifically speak to Reed's fate in the coming episodes, he did tease that this back-and-forth with the Sentinel Services would be Reed's most imminent obstacle.

"Jace is trying to use a pawn who's really somebody who is smart. So it's about them toying with each other and how that unfolds."

And while Reed will very much seem to be on the "good" side of things, Moyer spoke to how the show is morally grey in regard to him and Jace, a character who believes he's doing what is right, too.

"Jace is a good man who thinks he's doing the right thing," Moyer said. "His daughter was killed in a mutant incident, and he's never gotten to the bottom of what happened. So he's doing this job and he thinks he's doing the right thing, and he has reason to be doing the right thing."

In addition to facing off with Jace, Reed will also have to reckon with a mental obstacle as the series progresses — after spending his life recently in pursuit of mutants, he has to protect two mutants in his very family. But that doesn't necessarily Reed has fully swayed over to the mutant cause.

"It's too soon for him to have completely changed his world view," Moyer said of where Strucker finds himself at the end of the premiere. "Hopefully we'll get to see him fighting that conflicting emotional duality of those two things. Everything he believes in has been taken away from him. That's going to have an impact on him."

Moyer also teased that Strucker's knowledge of how the government works in regard to hunting down mutants for using their powers will likely also be of use as the series progresses and Reed journeys back to his family.
