PS4 Update 5.00 Adds Better Streaming and Social Features

Compete in Team Tournaments and follow your friends with the 5.00 update

The PlayStation 4's latest system software update, version 5.00, has been officially released, bringing with it improvements to family settings, streaming, messages, and more.

The biggest of the new additions is Team Tournaments, a new functionality that will let you and you friends compete with other players around the world for prizes. Beginning October 5th, you will be able to find Team Tournaments in the events section on your PS4, where you can create or join up to 60 different teams. Each team will have an owner and captains, as well as a customizable team page where you can see all of the information about your team. The initial titles supporting Team Tournaments will be Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, World of Tanks, and Mantis Burn Racing.

The update also brings some changes to PlayStations social and streaming features. For Twitch broadcasters on PS4 Pro, the new udpate supports 1090p 60fps streaming. When streaming PSVR, a new setting will let you display viewer comments in VR to keep up with your chat more easily.

For PS Messages, the update includes the ability to follow any PlayStation user (assuming they opt in) and get updates from them on your newsfeed. 5.00 also brings new features for PlayStation Music, which now allows you to share music via PS Messages and listen to music from the message.

Version 5.00 also includes a total overhaul of the console's master/sub-account system, replacing it with a new Family system. The new system will allow multiple users on the system to be set as the "Parent/Guardian," any of whom can set custom parental controls for the "Family Member/Child" users. Each tier of user is subject to their own level of control, and Child accounts can even be custom tuned for each user, including game age ratings.

To see all the new features in the 5.00 update, check out PlayStation Blog's release announcement. These changes are mostly in line with the details we reported on back in August, though beta testers have had access to some of these features for awhile now.
