DC Comics is gearing up for a huge Superman milestone in 2018. Today the "Meet the Publishers" panel at NYCC, DC Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio shed light on what fans can expect from the upcoming Action Comics #1000.
Issue #1000 is currently scheduled to ship in March 2018, which comes just before the character's 80th anniversary in May 2018. DC will be marking the occasion with an oversized issue featuring a number of new stories. The lead story will be co-written by regular Action Comics writer Dan Jurgens and Superman writer Peter Tomasi. Doomsday Clock writer Geoff Johns and Superman: The Movie director Richard Donner will also contribute stories to Action Comics #1000.
In addition, DC will be releasing a special anniversary hardcover in 2018 that collects a number of iconic Superman stories as well as essays from comics historians and a cover gallery of all 1000 issues of Action Comics. Perhaps the biggest selling point in this hardcover is a previously unpublished story that's believed to have been crafted by Superman co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
That wasn't the only big announcement at the "Meet the Publishers" panel. Writer Grant Morrison made a surprise appearance to show off some new colored artwork from the upcoming Wonder Woman: Earth One Book 2. You can check that out below:
Morrison also revealed that he'll be co-writing some issues of upcoming Dark Matter title Sideways with DiDio.
Fans of DC's mature readers-focused Vertigo imprint got some welcome news on the panel, as DiDio announced that the imprint will be relaunching in August 2018 under Executive Editor Mark Doyle. No specific titles were named, though at one point Morrison confirmed that he's written a third Seaguy miniseries that artist Cameron Stewart has yet to draw.
Finally, Mad Magazine is getting a major overhaul in 2018. Newly minted Executive Editor Bill Morrison will take charge of the long-running magazine, which will relaunch on April Fools Day of next year. Following the example of DC Comics in 2015, production of Mad will shift from New York to Los Angeles next year.
