It's a new age for Lucasfilm and Disney, as the huge success of last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens has set up enormous expectations for the future of the famed franchise. Aside from ongoing television series and comic books, we have annual film releases to look forward to -- and not all of them are centered on the Skywalker family, either. That's of course the case for next month's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
This is everything we know about the upcoming Star Wars films -- including the spinoff "Star Wars Stories" (formerly called the Anthology films) occupying the space between Force Awakens sequels.
- Starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen, and Forest Whitaker
- Directed by Gareth Edwards
- Story by John Knoll and Gary Whitta
- Screenplay by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy
- Release Date: December 16, 2016
The heist picture tells the story of how the Rebel Alliance stole the Death Star plans from the Galactic Empire. This first standalone anthology Star Wars film is expected to debut to more than $130 million at the domestic box office.
Felicity Jones leads the cast as Rebel fighter Jyn Erso, though her on-screen dad Mads Mikkelsen says that actually three different actresses play the character at different ages. Lucasfilm debuted the first official Rogue One cast photo at D23 in 2015, featuring stars Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Donnie Yen, and more. You can learn more about the cast with IGN's character guide to Rogue One: A Star Wars.
Director Gareth Edwards has explained that Rogue One will be more "real" than the mainline Star Wars films, drawing inspiration from Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, and Zero Dark Thirty. This will be the first Star Wars film not composed by John Williams.
Darth Vader will appear in the film, as will original trilogy characters like Mon Mothma. Pre-release materials have hinted at the the state of the Empire and the Jedi in Rogue One.
Gary Whitta wrote the first draft of Rogue One's script, which ended up in the hands of Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy). The story was originally developed by ILM's Chief Creative Officer/Senior Visual Effects Supervisor, John Knoll who also co-created the Photoshop software. Tony Gilroy joined the fold late in production for extensive reshoots.
At Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in 2015, Lucasfilm unveiled the first teasers for Rogue One. Concept art showed ground troops storming out of ships and into the rain, while the teaser trailer showcased the stunning scale of the Death Star near a planet.
- Starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran
- Directed by Rian Johnson
- Screenplay by Rian Johnson
- Release Date: December 15, 2017
According to Finn actor John Boyega, Star Wars: Episode 8 will be darker than The Force Awakens, with Finn having a more "physical" role. The story will focus on the Skywalker family, so much so that Prequel Trilogy star Hayden Christensen has been rumored to return as Anakin Skywalker. Time will tell if these rumors prove correct.
Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy has stated that the full cast from The Force Awakens would return. At the time, the death of Han Solo was not publicly known, so whether or not that includes Harrison Ford is yet to be confirmed. Mark Hamill filmed additional scenes on Skellig Michael -- where we find Luke at the end of The Force Awakens -- for Episode 8 in 2015.
Episode 8 is set to answer many new key questions, perhaps including Rey's lineage. Following rumors of a script rewrite, Disney pushed the release of the film back from May to December.
Adam Driver, who plays Kylo Ren, has compared the film to The Empire Strikes Back. And classic Star Wars composer John Williams will be once again to score Episode 8. The cast and crew shared photos from the shoot, including director Rian Johnson and Daisy Ridley (practicing her Chinese martial arts).
Benicio Del Toro is rumored to play a villain.
- Starring Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke
- Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller
- Screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan
- Release Date: May 25, 2018
The LEGO Movie directors will helm what may be the last Star Wars film written by Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote The Force Awakens, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. Kasdan is writing the film with his son, Jon. The Han Solo spin-off film follows a younger Han Solo, apparently college-aged.
Disney looked at more than 2,500 actors for the part before casting Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) in the role. Donald Glover (Community) is co-starring as the young Lando Calrissian and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) is playing an unnamed character. Creed and Selma star Tessa Thompson had also tested for the role, as did Zoe Kravitz and Power Rangers actress Naomi Scott. Speculation has pegged the female lead role as Sana Starros, Han Solo's first wife, though that remains unconfirmed.
Chewbacca, of course, will also be present. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has said the overall tone and direction of the movie will be like a Western and heist movie.
Lord and Miller spoke to IGN vaguely about revisiting one of the all-time greatest characters shortly after landing the job.
- Directed by Colin Trevorrow
- Story by Rian Johnson
- Screenplay by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly
- Release Date: 2019
We know very little about Episode 9, although director Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) has stated that Rey's origin story is "deeply and profoundly satisfying," which suggests, to nobody's surprise, that she'll play a key role in his film.
While we know nothing about who will or won't be in the film, Mark Hamill may have inadvertently confirmed Luke Skywalker for Episode 9 on social media. Trevorrow has also said that he's looked into shooting IMAX film in "actual space" for his Star Wars.
- Directed by TBD
- Screenplay by TBD
- Release Date: 2020
Originally planned as the second anthology film after Rogue One, a Boba Fett origin project has apparently stalled at least for the time being. Fantastic Four's Josh Trank was supposed to direct, but he ultimately left the film in 2015. Still, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in August of 2015 that the movie isn't going away. "It’s still one of the stories that we absolutely want to tell," she said. Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Apocalypse, Star Wars Rebels) wrote the script, and he has spoken very loosely about working on Star Wars.
But a third anthology film is in the works according to Disney chief Bob Iger, who told investors in September, 2016, that they've hired a writer for the project, which is planned for 2020. Nothing is currently known about this film's storyline, nor is whether or not it is the Boba Fett concept with a new creative team.
