Dragon Ball Super Episode 68 Review

Share.

The world’s longest wish.

Warning: The following contains spoilers about the episode.

With the chaos of the Future Trunks arc over, we get to see a lighter side of Dragon Ball Super. Episode 68 is filled with comedic moments and light-hearted conversation that was fun to watch, even if some moments dragged on longer than was necessary.

Shenron, the all-powerful wish granting dragon, is summoned again and serves to spark the comedic conflict of the episode. With several people demanding Goku relinquish his wishes, I found that the funniest moments came when we saw Shenron’s reaction. He is an incredibly powerful entity, but is forced to wait while the humans bicker among themselves. His growing impatience and anger at the situation is great, and given how many times they have put him through this, it’s a surprise he was as patient as he was.

This anger and impatience is then turned on its head when Shenron learns that Beerus is nearby. It’s a clever way to flip the situation around, and brought another smile as he was now shaking in fear before Beerus. Shenron has a time limit to his existence, so seeing him struggle against this so as to not upset Beerus was great.

Bulma also played a big role in this episode. She’s obsessed with the Time Machine and, even though she knows it’s wrong, her curiosity gets the best of her. Seeing her scientific mind run a bit wild is nice, and makes sense given what we know of her character. Then, in typical Bulma fashion, she takes charge of the wishing situation and solves everyone's wishes with words and money. This entire sequence is stellar, as it shows off the power Bulma has long held in the series, using her intelligence over fighting prowess to solve a situation.

The constant bickering amongst various characters was a little annoying, though. It set up a few laughs, but the fighting lasted for so long that by the end of the episode I was more than pleased to have Bulma show up and put an end to it. Had people been fighting over more meaningful requests the arguments might have been warranted, but it took a little too long to watch them debate their petty requests against Goku’s very heartfelt wish to bring back King Kai.

The Verdict

Fun, lighthearted, and with a strong arc surrounding Bulma, Episode 68 is a great change of pace after several weeks of much darker and somber toned episodes. Unfortunately some moments of the episode drag on far too long, especially the sometimes funny but seemingly childish bickering. Still, this episode served as a good buffer between arcs. Hopefully next week we will see the introduction of something that'll spark a fresh adventure for our heroes to go on.
