6 Things Final Fantasy XV Doesn't Tell You

It's true that Final Fantasy XV is a huge game, and doesn’t always do a great job of explaining its systems and nuances. Here’s a list of things Final Fantasy 15 could to a better job telling you.

When designing your own spells from scratch in a Magic Flask, you can create some absolutely incredible combos with the power of Catalysts. Many items from the game can be blended into a magic spell to create incredible new effects, like multicasts (Phoenix Downs), a chance at an instant kill (Gold Needle), and many more. Try mixing potions, treasures, and food ingredients in to see what effects are possible.

Ignis recipes are one of the game’s great collectibles. Recipes set the stage for tough fights, and the more you have, the more you can accomplish. So how do you find new recipes? They're hidden everywhere. Some are unlocked by defeating new monsters and collecting drops. Some are found in static locations in books or purchased recipes, through eating some food in restaurants, through observing people nearby eating, and through upgrading his Cooking skill.

Your Oracle Ascension Coins are a precious commodity - you'll get one as part of the main story, but many others are hiding around the world in the most unlikely places - in dungeons, stashed in the corners of outposts - and more!

They may not seem like a big deal, but eventually you'll meet a merchant later in the game that collects these coins, and will trade you for incredibly rare and powerful items.

Targeting in Final Fantasy XV can be a little confusing. While holding R1 allows you to lock on to a single enemy, losing your grip on the trigger in the midst of combat can throw battle into chaos. To prevent this, lock on, and while holding R1, press R3. Doing so switches you to a permanent locked mode, allowing you to switch between targets with a simple flick of the right stick. Additionally, this sets Warp Strikes to a simple tap of the Triangle button. Holding Triangle down still warps away to safety.

We also mention this in our Things To Do First section, but it’s so important it bears repeating. Where you sleep really matters. Campsites bolster your stats the next day if you cook a good mea, so they’re a great place to sleep before big hunts or fights. Camper RVs, motels, and hotels grant XP bonuses, so they’re great places to visit after a big battle to maximize your daily XP cash-in.

To make the most of your XP gains, go on several hunts, complete a few quests, and do everything you can around you before finding the best hotel in the area to get the biggest bonus. Campers grant 1.2 XP gains, while motels give 1.5 XP. If you can afford the 10,000 asking price, Galdin Quay's resort grants 2x the XP!

Eventually you're going to trigger an event that sets gunships full of soldiers after you. These guys show up at random times, (often when you're wandering the wilderness) and they can be a real pain. As time passes, they'll call in heavier and heavier reinforcements. Sometimes it's just best to duck, cover, and run when the Imperials arrive.

You may notice that certain gear - like Noctis' Engine Blade and some mechanical weapons show a + symbol. After the first Chapter, speak to Cid and you'll find that he can upgrade such weapons - in exchange for various types of treasure ranging from metal scraps found in the wild to exotic treasure found by taking down certain beasts.

Make sure to talk to him whenever you find an upgradable weapon, as they can often become viable long after other weapons stop becoming useful. For example, upgrading the Engine Blade will bring it from 28 attack to 40, and then to a whopping 207 with Engine Blade III - provided you can find the right materials.
