Genre movie staple and veteran character actor Doug Jones is the latest addition to the cast of Star Trek: Discovery, the forthcoming streaming series from CBS All Access.
Jones is best known for his creature suit characters in director Guillermo del Toro's films, such as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies and as the Pale Man and the Faun in Pan's Labyrinth. Jones also played the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and will soon be seen in the title role of The Bye Bye Man. He played the alien "Cochise" on Falling Skies, while Arrow and Flash fans may remember him as the villainous Deathbolt.
It was announced today that Jones will play “Lt. Saru,” a Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species to the Star Trek universe. Joining Jones in the cast is theater, film and TV veteran Anthony Rapp (Rent, A Beautiful Mind) as “Lt. Stamets,” an astromycologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery.
CBS also officially announced the previously reported cast member Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tomorrow Never Dies) as “Captain Georgiou,” the Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou.
Star Trek: Discovery premieres May 2017 on the CBS Television Network with all subsequent episodes available in the U.S. on CBS All Access. It will be distributed concurrently by CBS Studios International on Netflix in 188 countries and in Canada on Bell Media’s Space Channel and CraveTV.
