Marvel's Agents of SHIELD dove into Robbie Reyes' origin story in its latest episode, and revealed an unexpected wrinkle in the process.
Full spoilers for Agents of SHIELD continue below.
Deviating from the comics pretty heavily, Agents of SHIELD revealed in "The Good Samaritan" that, seemingly, another Ghost Rider granted Robbie his powers. In fact, that Ghost Rider very likely is Johnny Blaze.
While Agents of SHIELD never explicitly says that the flaming figure -- who Robbie identifies as "the Devil" -- is Johnny, there's plenty to suggest Robbie got his abilities from the other iconic Ghost Rider. In the episode, Robbie recalls flying out of his Dodge Charger during the wreck that lost his brother his ability to walk and praying, saying he would do anything if it meant Gabe would live. In the conversation with Daisy and his younger brother, Robbie then remembers that he died, only to get his powers from a flaming-skulled man in a leather jacket.
Meanwhile, Gabe shared his perspective of Robbie's unlikely survival of the crash, saying he saw Robbie lying on the asphalt when a "good samaritan," who pulled up on a motorcycle, helped his brother up. We never see the face of this mysterious stranger, but circumstantially he looks a lot like Johnny Blaze, the iconic Marvel hero who is known for riding around on a motorcycle. (Since it's not officially confirmed, we'll leave the shadow of a doubt that it's not actually him for now. But... let's face it, it's totally Johnny Blaze.)
It especially seems like him given Agents of SHIELD has already been hinting that Johnny exists in the MCU. Last week's episode, "Lockup," showed the Darkhold seemingly being found in his apartment. (That, or someone else really loves the Quentin Carnival.)
There's a lot unclear about how this Ghost Rider passed along his abilities to Robbie, though. Agents of SHIELD is heavily suggesting that Robbie is possessed by a Spirit of Vengeance just like Johnny Blaze was, though Robbie got his powers through different means in the comics. We've never seen a Ghost Rider pass on their abilities quite like this before, and it's unclear if Johnny -- or whoever it was -- gave up his powers, or actually created a second Ghost Rider.
Agents of SHIELD's producers Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon wouldn't comment to IGN about this reveal or offer clarification for what we're seeing, but at the rate Agents of SHIELD is going, we'll find out sooner rather than later if this is Johnny. At the time, the Johnny Blaze Easter eggs in "Lockup" simply seemed like nods to the Ghost Rider mythology for eagle-eyed viewers, but just a week later the show followed them up by seemingly including him in the show.
And what does his potential inclusion mean for Agents of SHIELD? Will Daisy and Robbie need to track him down to find out more information about how Robbie got his powers? Will they go to him for help in the inevitable fight against the now-superpowered Eli Morrow? Or -- even better -- could Marvel potentially spin off another Ghost Rider show featuring Johnny, potentially even fighting alongside Robbie Reyes? (OK, we might be getting ahead of ourselves with that one.)
One way or another, it seems like Marvel TV is introducing the idea of multiple Ghost Riders into its mythology, which sets the stage for Robbie Reyes not being the only one possessed by the Spirit of Vengeance in this world. That's more than we could have hoped for Agents of SHIELD's take on the iconic Marvel hero.
