Someone call up Knox County, Tennessee (1-800-555-KNOX?), or Mike Knox, or someone (Brodus Clay's mother?) and let them know we've got their prim and proper Mayoral candidate. He's off his leash and running around the neighbors' yards. Most notably, the yard of "Big Dog" Roman Reigns, who hates it when people step foot in his yard and yard around with their yard-ness.
Now, here's the deal. I enjoy Kane. I don't always enjoy Kane, but he's an icon and one of the most underrated performers in the company. Underrated though because, basically, we've just seen too damn much of him. The same can be said of Ziggler and others who've just been on out TV consistently for too long. It's the downside of having too many hours of wrestling to fill. No one every goes away until we've long-since wanted them to go away.
Kane being off TV was good. There's really nothing for him in 2017 and with his shift over to politics (Glenn Jacobs has always been political, of course) it was understandable that he'd need the time off for his campaign and to, possibly, distance himself from the product a bit to show voters that he was serious about his proposed commitments to them. So to have Kane back now, in full "Demon Kane" heel mode, is a curious twist. At first I thought "Did Glenn lose the election? Did he win? When do people get to vote?"
I guess the campaign's still in full swing and Jacobs has just decided to wear the mask again for a quick(ish) program for TLC. Maybe he needs money for more ads and outreach. Maybe it was always just a matter of WWE not having anything for him but he'd always be available if they suddenly did. Either way, Kane coming back helps make TLC feel even more oogedy and boogedy as a PPV close to Halloween and the fact that he actually might have a good reason for being there, story wise, makes it all click.
Upside? Kane's back to stomp all over Roman Reigns for not only retiring Undertaker but also constantly bragging about retiring Undertaker. It makes sense. Not only that, but we're getting old(er) school Kane, with the full music and the leaping Tombstone. It's inconsistent, sure, since Kane's a guy who's power and strength seems to have always grown or shrunk based on the program he was in, but I accept it.
Downside? Really, the Shield is going to face five guys? This either means that five great heels will look like fools when they lose to three dudes or we're about to have Shield lose in their first match together in years. Neither scenario feels right. I'm not here to s*** all over Kane's return, it's fine overall, but WWE had to expect a backlash when Miz spent a while teasing a mystery fifth man and then it was Kane. Don't ever give fans time to create a wish list. This is like when Teddy Long's mystery opponent for everyone for an entire year was always Sheamus. They should have just had Kane pop up at the end and then have Miz announce him as the fifth guy with no lead in.
Now, speaking of spooky scary happenings, we're also apparently getting Angry Grocery Store Halloween Cake vs. Hot Topic Chewbacca at TLC...
[deepest sigh I've ever sighed]
I feel like this could have all worked well with a few changes. Firstly, the fact that they constantly ignore the fact that Finn lost to Bray clean on RAW is bothersome. It was the inciting incident for the "Demon" arriving at SummerSlam. With them never mentioning it now, the story is "Well, Bray lost to the Demon and he lost to the man and now he's gone bye bye." Finn should have nothing more to prove here. It's not like Bray's even ambushed him since his loss at No Mercy (which was a great match, btw). He's just been taunting Finn with videos. That's hardly enough to justify this feud continuing on. It all needs to escalate, not fizzle out.
Then there was the Sister Abigail nonsense from last week that they tried to subtly course-correct this week by removing the Cookie Puss voice from Bray's previous promo. But then what we were left with was Bray talking in a softer, higher voice (with a real female's voice spliced in occasionally) and sounding pretty damn silly.
Topping it all off, Finn's now bringing back the Demon. So he used the Demon and won, proved that he didn't need the Demon and won, and now is...going back to the Demon? And the Demon is a giant piece of candy corn? It's upsetting. Now, beyond all of this, I know these two can put on a great match regardless, but - yeah - this third act of the story is really absurd. It can all be made up to me by having Sister Abigail appear as a real woman, of course, but that seems pretty slim right now.
There were rumors a few weeks ago that Finn would be Brock's challenger at Survivor Series, which would mean that he'd go over Bray at TLC and then head up to a main event program. Now that Jinder's thrown down the gauntlet at Brock though, does this mean Finn could lose to Bray? I wouldn't want that for Finn but at the same time...who wants to see a feud where someone loses three PPVs in a row? Where's the freakin' fun in that? Also, I'd hate to see the Sister Abigail card get pulled and then just lead to a huge loss.
